The Grand Jury for each county developed as was the main arm of local government in the 18th century with responsibility for:
• roads and bridges
• lunatic asylums
• county infirmaries and fever hospitals
• dispensaries
• courthouses
• gaols
The records of the Waterford Grand Jury include:
• Query Books: which detail payments made to individuals for the maintenance of sections of the roads, bridges, piers and other works. Records the development of Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Railway Company. Contains the payments made for the maintenance of girls and boys at industrial schools, the support of lunatics and the dispossessed and the provision of police. Details the salaries paid to officers such as the County Surveyor and doctors at hospitals and dispensaries and the payments to local newspapers such as the ‘Waterford Star’ and ‘Waterford Standard’ for advertising.
