The World War II Casualty Lists for the United States are provided by the National Archives and Records Administration. They are an important index for determining when and where your family member lost their life during the conflict, anywhere in the world. The collection on Findmypast currently contains the U.S. Navy; additional arms of the military services will be added at a later date.
These lists should be used as a starting place for military research in the 1940s for volunteers and draftees alike.

There were 407,316 lives lost during World War II from all branches of the military and 671,278 wounded, according to the National World War 2 Museum. The provide the following breakdown per branch of service:
• Army and Air Force: 318,274 killed; 565,861 wounded
• Navy: 62,614 killed; 37,778 wounded
• Marines: 24,511 killed; 68,207 wounded
• Coast Guard: 1,197 killed, unknown wounded
