The parish lists were created by the Episcopalian curates of Galloway and Dumfriesshire, with the aim to produce nominal rolls of all people, male or female, over the age of 12, residing in the local parish. The lists also not if a person is ‘irregular’ which means they were non-conforming or not a member of the established church. The parish lists were first created in October 1684. Centuries later the Scottish Record Society published the lists in 1916.
