Each of these publications have a different format and different criteria for including names in the roll of honour. However, in most cases you should find the following facts about your ancestor:
Name
Rank
Service/branch
Unit
Regiment
Residence
Some rolls also include the individual’s birth date, death day and how they died. Others will note if the individual was given an award or mentioned in despatches.
Rolls of honour were created by schools, universities, parishes, and places of employment to honour those who participated or gave the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. Each honour roll has its own format and criteria for what names and how much information was included. For example, the Peeblesshire Roll of Honour added the ‘names of men who have been discharged from the Army, owing to the serious nature of their wound or because they had become physically unfit for further service.’ While the St Andrew’s University roll of honour added additional details about the individual including their birth date, where they served, if they were injured or killed in action, where they died, and more details about their service.

Use your ancestors full name as it would appear on an official record. For example, search for William instead of Will.
Alternatively, if the full first name does not work try the first initial and surname. Some records will only have the names listed as first initial and surname; for example, W Anderson.
To narrow your search, use the keyword search. Add a rank or a regiment or a residence. Keep trying different combinations.
