Clare Poor Law Unions Board Of Guardians Minute Books Image Browse

The Irish workhouses were institutions created in 1838, to provide a place of relief for the poor, sick, elderly and orphaned across Ireland; however, they were used as a final measure. They were designed to be cold, intimidating and uninviting. The Board of Guardians were responsible for the management of the workhouses. They met on a weekly basis and these minute books record the operations of the workhouse. You will find each week the number of people housed in the workhouses, being treated in the infirmary, treasurer reports, any incidents within the workhouse, reports from the matron and master and more. The books are from the Unions in County Clare.
