There are over 24,600 banns records covering the county of Rutland in this collection. The records span from 1653 to the 1931 and cover 49 parishes. Follow the link in the Useful links and resources section to see a full list of parishes covered.
For each result, there is a transcript and image of the original burial register. While the amount of information may vary from transcript to transcript, most will include the following details:
Spouse’s first name(s)
Spouse’s last name
In looking at the image of the original register, you may be able to learn all the dates your ancestor’s banns were published and the marital status of the couple. Additionally, some registers also included the subsequent marriage date and place of the couple, as well as who witnessed the marriage. Images have been provided by the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland.
Civil registration was passed in 1837, which means that for vital records, such as those for banns and marriages, parish registers are imperative for gathering essential details for family history research like dates, names, and places. Parish registers date as far back as 1538.
Banns are the publications on three successive Sundays of a couple's intention to marry. The banns registers, however, are also interesting for identifying marriages which took place outside the parish in question (usually in the parish of the bride when different) and, of course, for marriages which, for whatever reason, were planned but never took place. The majority of marriages were preceded by banns; however, a minority were by licence and, of course, such marriages will not appear in these records.
For banns, there is an 85-year cut-off. As time goes on, we will be able to release more records as we receive them.
The county of Rutland is in the East Midlands of England and is landlocked by Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire.
