After the outbreak of World War II in Europe in 1939, the United States Congress passed the Selective Service Act of 1940 and began the first peacetime draft in the history of the country, in anticipation for joining the war. While the military draft, or Selective Service System, was a national obligation, this registration was carried out by draft boards on a local level throughout the duration of the war. Even after World War II ended in 1945, the draft was revived again by the Selective Service Act of 1948 and various other laws that kept military conscription active in peacetime, although fewer people were called up for service.
If you are having trouble finding your ancestor in the records, you can widen your search by clicking the “name variants” box under the search bar. When checked, this will return even more records, including those with similar names, alternate spellings or the use of initials or middle names.
If your ancestor had a common name, you can help narrow down the results by adding their county to this search. This will reduce the number of records you see, so you can find your ancestor more easily.
